The BMT journey all started after

a campaign that a few Black male teachers got together and produced during June, 2020 which attracted a lot of attention going viral on social media platforms over 70,000 views.

Recent data (School Teacher Workforce, 2021) shows that Black Men are massively underrepresented when it comes to teaching because there aren’t many men in the profession, thus negatively impacting the diversity of role models for young Black Men.

85.8% of male teachers and 85.7% of female teachers are White British.

3.5% of teachers in the UK are male from Black ethnic groups.

Black teacher trainees are 21% less likely to be accepted.

96.5% of headteachers in Britain are White British.

1% of headteachers in Britain are Black.

1.6% of deputies and assistant heads in Britain are Black.
